The Olympic borough of
Newham staged a Sport and Activity day for women on Friday 11
March at Newham Leisure centre which saw judo feature as one of
the attractions.
The British Judo London
Area produced the sport’s showcase as Nicole Nunn, East London
Development Coach, delivered the session which started with the
National Governing Body’s new fitness initiative, JudoFit, as
a warm up.

“All the women taking part
had never tried judo before and were nervous to start which is
understandable,” said Nicole.
“Before long they were
enjoying themselves and working very hard. They were surprised
by their own strength.
“We also had Deborah Ringer from A1
Newham College Judo Club in attendance to help deliver the session.
All participants were sign posted to a dedicated women’s only
session held on Wednesday evenings at A1 which is led by Tahmina
Karimova.”
Tahmina, 20, a UKCC level
2 coach, is leading the sessions and has endeared herself to judoka
right across the capital with her patient and accommodating approach.
“The session has already
become pretty popular with nearly 20 women now attending the class
and they range in age from 16 to 45,” said Karimova, who is also
working to achieve her black belt.
“I love coaching women,
it’s a different experience because I'm used to coaching primary
and secondary school children. Women are a little harder to coach
since I am younger than them and gaining respect as a coach is
difficult at first but it is a challenge worth doing because we
have such a good time.”
Participants can be aged
16 plus and need to wear light fitting clothing. Training takes
place from 18:00 – 19:30 every Wednesday at Newham College of
FE, High Street South, East Ham, E6 6ER.
