Hundreds of youngsters try judo as London Area promotes National Sports Week

British Judo’s London Area ensured the Olympic sport of judo engaged in National School Sport Week recently by staging a variety of well-received activities across the capital.

East London Development Coach Nicole Nunn led the activities as she was assisted throughout the week by 17-year-old brothers and black belts Jake and Sam Barker, who were on a placement as BTEC sports students.

On Monday 27 June, Fairlop Primary School hosted a dynamic judo demonstration which saw 80 pupils try judo and afterwards received further information in the form of flyers on nearby outfit Redbridge Judo Club.

On Tuesday, All Saints School received a demonstration of the Olympic sport with 88 pupils taking to the mat. Over half followed up their first taste of judo by taking a flyer to Ford Judo Club who are based only two miles away from the school.

On Wednesday, British Judo’s London Area joined forces with the British Triathlon Federation to host a special event as 960 pupils come along to experience both Olympic sports from across the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

After completing the Kata Kids of Steel mini-triathlon many children turned their attention to the dojo and sampled judo for the first time.

Accomplished coaches Lionel Hibbert (Pride Judo Club), Karim Boubasa and Sheree Seath (Willesden 2011 Judo Club) and Steve Fraser (BJA Technical Officer) joined Nicole Nunn and Strotford Judo Club pair Jake and Sam Barker.

The sessions provided the children with an insight into the many different aspects of the sport, from judo games to Judo Fit, and Ne-Waza (groundwork) to Nage-Komi (practicing techniques repeatedly).

On Thursday, Birchwood School staged hour long taster sessions which attracted 60 pupils. The same sessions were then conducted at Furneux Pelham Primary School and saw 70 pupils take part.

The final day on Friday 1 July saw the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre run sessions for disabled children

Karen French, London Development Manager, said: “We saw a fantastic engagement from participants throughout the week and on the final day we were able to accept all disability groups onto the mat with 80 children taking part.

“Many voted for judo as their favourite activity of the week and we’ve since had many requests from schools across London to stage further taster sessions and demonstrations. These will be overseen by the London Area or linked to local coaches to deliver with our full support so they can raise awareness of their clubs.”
