Sally Conway took the gold
medal in the -70kg weight category in Belarus at the 2009 Minsk
World Cup, held on the 10th -11th October.
After just missing out
on a medal at the Senior World Championships finishing fifth,
and a disappointing performance at the GB World Cup, Conway has
proven she can still perform well against the top players from
around the World.
Conway progressed to the
final after seeing off the challenge from Tetyana Savenko of the
Ukraine and Katarzyna Klys of Poland.
Conway was drawn in final
against French judoka Mylene Chollet, who took gold at the 2009
GB World Cup. Winning the fight by Waza-ari, Conway claimed her
place at the top of the medal rostrum.
Commenting on her gold
medal win, Conway said: “I'm Happy with my performance at
the weekend, beating Chollet in the final was a highlight
as I had fought her a couple of years ago and lost to her.
“I was pleased to fight
Klys of Poland as she does well at the tournaments and
I haven't had the chance to fight her before Belarus.
“For the next couple of
months I am hoping to train and compete in Japan in the Tokyo
Grand Slam. I feel it will help me make the improvements
I need to become better”.
Sarah Adlington continued
to perform well after taking gold at the GB World Cup by returning
from Minsk with a silver medal in the +78kg weight category.
With a boost of confidence
from the GB World Cup, taking the title for the second year running,
Adlington hoped to perform well yet again. She was drawn against
Anaid Mkhitaryan of Russia in the semi-final.
Adlington beat the Russian
and progressed to the final against the GB World Cup bronze medallist
Rebecca Ramanich of France. Ramanich proved to be too good for
Adlington, both had two penalty points but the Brit had only one
yuko to the French player’s two. Ramanich finally won the fight
by ippon, earning her the gold medal.
The third player form the
three-strong team, Sarah Clark, took 7 th place in the -63kg competition.
Clark won her first
fight against French judoka Virginie Henry, but then had to withdraw
after sustaining an elbow injury.
Great Britain finished
fourth overall out of the fifteen countries that took part, behind
France who came first followed by Russia and Ukraine.
