When to train with a respiratory infection: Do the neck check!

Coughs and colds are very common at this time of year. Thankfully most only produce mild symptoms, but it is important to know that training with a more serious infection can cause problems

Most people can train up to 80% of their VO2 max with a mild respiratory infection. Symptoms are confined to above the neck. These are sore throat, blocked nose, headache but no temperature.

However if you have symptoms ‘below the neck’ i.e a cough, muscular and joint aches, a temperature above 38 degrees centigrade, have a resting heart rate 10 beats above normal or if you feel unwell, you should seek a medical opinion and stop training until the symptoms have improved. This is usually 3 to 5 days.

If you have any of these symptoms seek medical advice
