Holbrook Judo Club is top May Madness fundraiser for 2010

Holbrook Judo Club has once again raised the most amount of money during the British Judo Trust’s themed fundraising month, May Madness, making them the winner for the fourth consecutive year.

The fundraising event took place on 15th May 2010 at one of the club’s training venues, Brune Park Community College and saw the participants raise £528.00.

Over 20 players from the club took part in the sponsored throw, which this year saw them beat their 2009 record of 1,958 throws in ten minutes.

Proud of his member’s efforts, Club Coach Paul Vella said, “We achieved, as a club, one more throw in 10 minutes than last year when there were other clubs in attendance, so I think that was a real achievement for our players.”

The British Judo Trust pledged 50% of the funds raised back to the clubs and the other 50% will be invested into helping young judo players reach their full potential.

As winners this year, Holbrook Judo Club have been rewarded a free VIP box at this year’s GB World Cup at the NIA, Birmingham this October.

Raising the second highest amount was Mid Cornwall Judo Kwai who organised a ‘Judo Brain Training’ session and raised £219.50. The May Madness activity involved tying a belt in 90 seconds, naming judo throws, showing as many ground-holds as the players could, memory test of throws and break-fall relays.

The Newquay based club have won a visit from the British Judo Association Chairman, Densign White, who will take a club session.

Also taking part in the British Judo Trust fundraiser was Norwich Premier Judo Club who invited members to raise money during a 50 minute randori, 25 minute ne-waza and 25 minute techi-waza. The club also decided to donate all the funds raised from the activity to the Trust.

Senior Coach at the club, Dave Horton-Jones, said,” The event was a success with 20 junior judoka participating. There were parts where the players got to do some slow motion judo, which was great and the judoka were able to demonstrate total control and skill in the performance of their throws whilst taking rests.”

Thomas Deacon Judo Club made a donation of £45.00 to the Trust as part of May Madness.

The British Judo Trust would like to thank all that took kindly took part in the 2010 May Madness fundraising activity, who together raised over £800.00.
