Britain win eight medals at the World Championships for Masters

Eight medals were won by the GB masters team on the last weekend of May at the First IJF World Championships for Masters. These included three gold medals, one silver and four bronze medals.

The Championships were held for the first time in Sindelfingen, a suburb of Stuttgart in Germany where 41 nations fought over two days.

Terry Watt beat Pedro Carpintero Munoz de la Pena of Spain by ippon in the -90kg final (M7, 60 to 64 years) after winning his first two fights with ease to take the gold medal.

Kay Andrews (-78kg, F4, 45 to 49 years) also won her final by ippon against Sylvia Mende of Germany, earning her the gold medal.

Sarah Hopkins knocked Gertrude Ginterseder of Austria out of the -70kg (F3, 40 to 44 years) preliminary round to later beat Tanja Schoneborn of Germany by ippon in the final for gold.

The silver medal was won by Derek Hopkins (-90kg, M4, 45 to 49 years) and the bronze medals were won by Brian Hewitt (-60kg - M4, 45 to 49 years), Nick Kokotaylo (+100kg, M5, 50-54 years), Lydia Ritchie (-52kg, F4, 45 to 49 years) and Stanley Cantrill (-73kg, M7, 60 to 64 years).

The British team finished in 7th place on the medal table. Germany, France and Russia took the top three spots.
