British team selected for 2009 Junior World Championships

Eight players were selected by British Judo to compete in the 2009 Junior World Championships on the 22nd -25th October in Paris. Due to injuries, the travelling team will be a five-strong team.

Hardy Spicer player, Luke Taylor, won a bronze medal at last year’s Junior Worlds and has been selected to compete in the -90kg category.

Samantha Clark, who finished in 5th Place in the -52kg weight category last year, was named to compete again this year. Clark has put in some good performances already this year, winning gold at the Tre-Torri International and bronze in the Sens French Junior International.

Owen Livesey (-73kg) who will be competing in this event for the very first time, has also been selected after finishing in 7th Place at the 2009 Junior Europeans last month.

Completing the line up Louise Little (-78kg) and Gary Hall (-81kg) will compete in their respective weight categories.

Commenting on the selected team, Performance Operations Manager, Karen Roberts said, “The Junior World Championships provides a critical experience for players on the Performance Player Pathway, the selected players have demonstrated through the year they are capable of stepping up to compete at this level.”

Recovering from injuries, but also travelling with the delegation to observe, is 2008 Junior World bronze medalist Gemma Howell, Jermaine McIntosh and Scarlett Woolcock who earned the best result at the 2009 Junior European Championships, finishing in 5th Place.

At the IJF Executive Committee meeting in Rotterdam last month, it was decided that new refereeing rules would be tested at this event. To view the rule changes that will be in place for this event, please click on the following link:
