BRITISH OPEN COUNTDOWN – PLAYER FOCUS: JAMES MILLAR

Great Britain judo star James Millar is chasing success on home soil when he takes centre stage at the 2010 London British Open at the K2 Crawley leisure centre on the weekend of Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th May.

The 28-year-old is one of a host of highly-accomplished international players who will be in action at the Open which this year is an EJU Senior European Cup Event.

Millar, a member of the renowned Edinburgh Judo Club, who trains at the Performance Centre at Ratho, has made a promising start to the year after a fifth place finish at the Prague World Cup in February.

The Scottish standout, who is currently preparing for the European Championships in Austria later this month, said: “I’ve never won the Open, that’s why I’m competing.

“I’ve had a few bronzes at the event but I’m still chasing a win there.”

The under 60kg fighter is also relishing the opportunity to compete in front of a partisan crowd at an international event.

“It’s always good to compete in front of a home crowd and with the European’s a couple of weeks before the event comes at quite a good time for me.”

The highly-anticipated event will showcase fighters from across Europe and Millar’s participation could spark a keen uptake of entries in his 60kg category.

“That’s very flattering but I don’t see myself as a big name,” said the 2009 British Judo Association Male Player of the Year.

To players considering entering the event James said: “I’d say definitely go for it, whether you’re a senior or a cadet, I entered my first British Open when I was 17.”

All individuals who wish to enter this event must contact CSE on judo@corporate-sporting.com or +44 (0)121 7790880 to start their application process. Once completed, the individual will be issued a link to setup and authorise their personal account which will then be password protected. The account can be accessed 24 hours a day for individuals to make additions or amends.

Next week: Ben Quilter
