Euan Burton has continued
his successful streak with a silver medal at the 2010 German Grand
Prix at the weekend.
Adding to his gold medal
win at the 2009 Tokyo Grand Slam late last year, Burton's victories
will fare well in the build up to the European and World Championships
in April and September of this year.
Surging through the -81kg
preliminaries, Burton beat Loseb Tselauri of Georgia in the first
round, Nick Hein of Germany in his second round fight and Emmanuel
Lucenti of Argentina in the third round.
It didn’t take him long
to win his semi-final fight against Robert Krawczyk of Poland
with an ippon throw, after just one minute and six seconds on
the mat.
Progressing to the final, Burton faced
Jae-Bum Kim, the World ranked number one Korean player that the
Brit beat in the final of the Tokyo Grand Slam. After a close
five minutes, the fight ended on penalty points, Burton receiving
three penalties to Kim’s two.
"I proved again
that I can do it at the top level but losing in a final is always
a disappointment," he said.
"Being left to
the referee's decision is never the best way to win or lose."
Elsewhere, team mate
Sarah Adlington finished in 5th place in the +78kg weight category.
Adlington started off well, beating Beatrice Rietz of Germany
in the first round, but was caught by Eva Bisseni of France in
the second, who went on to take the silver medal.
Commenting on the results,
Performance Director Margaret Hicks said. “Euan has put in another
excellent performance and showed his class on fighting a very
competitive final. He was unfortunate to lose out to Kim.
“Sarah Adlington continues
to show potential in the +78kg weight category.”
Sarah Clark (-63kg),
the final player in the trio who competed in Dusseldorf, picked
up an injury in the second round against Yarden Gerbi of Israel.
