EUROPEAN BRONZE FOR WINSTON GORDON

Winston Gordon won bronze in the –90kg weight category at the 2006 European Judo Championships, which took place in Tampere, Finland from 26 th –28 th May.

It is the first European medal for the 27-year-old from Wandsworth who finished 5 th in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The Budokwai player lost only to the eventual gold medallist Ivan Pershin of Russia - but came back through the repechage to beat Krzysztof Weglarz of Poland in the bronze medal match.

The Brits won a total of four medals at the Championships which means they finished third in the overall medal table - behind France in first place and Russia in second.

It also brought two new British European Champions. Craig Fallon won gold on day one in the –60kg weight category and Sarah Clark won the –63kg title on day two - the first time in ten years that Britain has had more that one European Champion at the same time.

A second bronze of the Championships was won by Harlow’s Peter Cousins in the –100kg weight category on Sunday.

Colin McIver, British Judo Performance Director said, “It was the best performance by a British team at a European Championships in ten years.

“We must now concentrate on building on this success as we go forward into next year for the Olympic qualification period for Beijing”
