Athens Paralympic silver medallist Ian Rose has won a bronze medal at the 2006 IBSA World Judo Championships, which took place in Brommat, France, from 29 th June - 3rd July.

With the Championships being one of three Beijing Paralympic qualifiers Rose, from High Wycombe, is in good standing to qualify should his results continue.

The other two Paralympic qualifying events are the Visually Impaired European Judo Championships and the Visually Impaired World Judo Championships in 2007.

In the pool stages, Rose beat Chih Hsin Hu of China in his opening match but lost against Antonio Silva of Brazil in his second.

The defeat dropped him into the repechage where he overpowered Markus Uppmann of Germany, before defeating Grigory Shineyderman of Russia in the bronze medal match.

The British squad also managed two 5 th places from Simon Jackson and Ben Quilter.

Jackson, a three times Paralympic gold medallist, narrowly missed out on a medal finishing 5 th in the –73kg category after losing the bronze medal match to Matthias Krieger of Germany.

Ben Quilter, in the –60kg weight category, also finished with a 5 th place after being defeated in the fight for the bronze medal against Makoto Hirose of Japan.

The 5 th place positions also count towards Beijing qualification, which is based on World rankings after the three events (the top six men and top four women per weight category will qualify).

Commenting on the results Colin McIver, British Judo High Performance Director said, “I am happy with the esults achieved in France. However, we need to aim to win medals across the entire team in the remaining qualifiers in order for all our players to be fully secure in the final rankings for Beijing places.”
