Over 200 international competitors to compete in this weekend’s British Open Championships

The 42nd annual British Open Championships will take place at K2 leisure centre in Crawley this Saturday and Sunday (2nd & 3rd May).

The tournament will see 348 competitors competing over the two days with international players and delegations representing countries including Russia, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Luxemburg, Canada, Malta and the USA. 

In addition, over 30 French players will compete, the first time that France has been represented at the British Open since 2004. Spain is the second biggest nation represented with over 50 competitors.

British medal hopes at the event include Commonwealth Champion and Beijing Olympian Winston Gordon and six-times World medallist and three-time Olympian Karina Bryant.

Commenting, Densign White BJA Chairman said, “The 2009 British Open will be one of the most exciting for many years and is being well support by national teams, clubs and individuals from around the world.

“The British Open has this year become an official European B Tournament and is an important part of the European Judo Union’s plans to introduce a new tier of competition in Europe, which can be used to build experience and as a spring board to the next level of competition”.

The Preliminary rounds start each day at 9am.

Saturday 2nd May - Men’s: -60kg, -66kg -73kg weight categories and Women’s: -63kg, -70kg, +78kg weight categories.

Sunday 3rd May – Men’s: -81kg, -90kg, +100kg and Women’s: -48kg, -52kg, -57kg weight categories.

Entry is £10 per day for adults and £5 for concessions (OAPs and under 16s). A weekend ticket costs £16 for adults and £7.50 for concessions.
