Britain has won nine
medals at the 2010 British Open, which took place at the K2, Crawley
at the weekend.
The host nation finished
in third place overall, with the Netherlands
taking the top spot, followed by France.
Britain
won three gold medals, one silver and five bronze medals, just
one gold medal down from last year’s results.
British
golds were won by Gemma Howell (-63kg), Ashley McKenzie (-60kg)
and Sarah Adlington (+78kg).
After
10 months out by injury, the British Open played stage to Gemma
Howell‘s return to competition.
Howell,
who has made her place previously in the -57kg weight category
at the Championships, competed in the -63kg competition and seemed
untroubled by the change.
This
is Howell’s second medal at the Championships, adding to the bronze
she won in 2007.
Ashley McKenzie, who was
the only reigning British Open Champion defending their title
going into the event, looked at ease throughout the day and retains
his title in the -60kg weight division for the third consecutive
year.
Nathon Burns took the silver
medal in the -60kg weight category and James Millar won the bronze.
Sarah Adlington, who had
to miss the British Open last year due to injury, looked classy
in the +78kg gold medal final winning with an impressive
ippon throw against opponent Alicia
Alonso of Spain.
Colin
Oates (-66kg) , Sally Conway
(-70kg), Chris Sherrington (+100kg) and Siobhan O’Neill (-52kg)
also won bronze medals for Britain.
All British medallists
are training within the performance programme at the British Judo
Performance Institute in Dartford and Ratho in Edinburgh.
16 nations in total competed
over the two days.
