British Open Countdown – Player focus on Tom Reed

By Nicola Turner

University of Bath student Tom Reed hopes to take his second British Open medal, after winning a silver medal at the Tournament in 2008.

Reed, originally from Devizes, looks forward to fighting some of Europe’s finest once again at this year’s event, being held at the K2 Crawley leisure centre on the weekend of Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th May.

“This is a big event in my competitive calendar. It has been previously well attended by a lot of international players, so it’s a good event to fight against players I might not meet in other tournaments. With it now also being a Senior European Cup event, I think it will see good attendance,” says Reed.

The 24-year-old player’s focus will not just be on putting in a good performance at the event, but also on his final exams which follow closely after the Open.

As for most students, the final year at University is hard work, but Reed has managed to tackle both and still come out with top results, such as his recent silver medal at the Vienna World Cup.

The Team Bath player is also in the running for the 2010 University of Bath’s Sports Personality of the Year Award, voted for by student members of the Sports Association.

“I’m not far off completing my course now. It has been a challenge to manage both my judo career and my coursework, I have quite a few exams after the British Open, so I will more than likely be revising in my hotel room over the weekend,” he said.

“I take every event I compete in seriously and aim to perform well. My training at Bath has been geared up towards this event, with shorter more intense sessions as it gets closer.”

The Brit fights in the highly competitive U81kg weight category, which often sees him against fellow squad player Euan Burton for the top spot. But this hasn’t dampened Reed’s charge for a place at the World Championships in September.

“My weight category is a busy category, but I like to keep focused on my own performance. I have progressed a lot recently and a bit healthy competition will help me improve and be the best I can.”
