VI and fully sighted players link up at BJPI Training Day

The British Judo Performance Institute hosted a training day for visually impaired and fully sighted judoka on Saturday 13 November.

The day was led by British Judo’s VI Talent Development Coordinator and four-time European Champion Ian Rose.

There were two-hour sessions either side of lunch as Mon and Kyu grade judoka (aged 12 and above) acquainted themselves with the high-profile setting and players from across the country.

Ian Rose coached the sessions alongside 2010 English Senior Open winner Jonathan Purssey.

“The day was aimed at VI and fully sighted players and we were successful in attracting and working well with everyone who took part,” said Rose.

“I think training at the BJPI, home to VI World Champion Ben Quilter and world silver medallist Joe Ingram, was a fantastic opportunity for all judoka to train at a top facility.

“We focused on enjoyment and learning, with the odd fight thrown in.”

Brighton Judo Club coach Mark Denney brought a number of his players and a complete newcomer to the sport.

“All the coaches where very friendly and put over the information well,” said the 4th Dan.

J.S.C product and former British international Vicky Dunn was on hand to assist Sue, who was attending her very first session.

“Ian and John spent time with all of the players helping and demonstrating the moves and describing them well while Vicky helped Sue feel like one of us.

“I got involved with helping some of the juniors and VI players and found the whole session hard work but very rewarding. My Kyu grade Colin actually said it had boosted his confidence 100%.”

“After a very respectable effort Sue also said she will be coming along to the class I run at Brighton on a Monday.

“I would like to thank Ian and John and Vicky for all there help making the day's two, two hours sessions so enjoyable.”

Brighton Judo Club train at 1-9 St James Garden, Sussex, BN2 1RU. Men and women train on a Monday and Wednesday at 20:00 – 22:00 while kano members take to the mat on a Friday at 18:30 – 19:30. Juniors follow on a Friday at 19:30 – 20:30.
