Be an ‘AASE’ judoka! - Exciting judo opportunities for 16-19 year olds

Advanced Apprenticeships in Sporting Excellence (AASE)

The BJA wishes to remind all young Judo players of the exciting ‘AASE’ opportunity that exists within Judo allowing talented and committed young players to access enhanced Judo training whilst continuing their educational achievements – WIN: WIN!

Q) What is AASE?

AASE is a programme designed specifically for Judo players aged between 16-19 years and allows them to develop their potential in Judo through enhanced training whilst continuing their education.

The overall AASE programme is a combination of education and enhanced Judo training where students obtain a qualification for their Judo development.

The aim of the BJA AASE programme is to develop talented Judo players in an all round capacity!

Q) Who is AASE developed by?

AASE is a government backed initiative (implemented by SkillsActive) whose aim is to recognise and support the development of young, talented athletes.

A variety of sports are involved in the development and implementation of the AASE programme and see it as an essential part of their sports player pathways.

Judo AASE providers and the BJA are working in collaboration via an AASE steering group to share good practice and further develop the Judo Technical Certificate of the programme.

Successful students obtain not only their certificates for their individual qualifications but also a special AASE certificate demonstrating their success as a sporting excellence apprentice.

For more detailed information please see the following web links:

www.skillsactive.com/training/apprenticeships/aase.com

Q) What does AASE consist of?

AASE consists of enhanced Judo training and development – this is done through players maintaining a training diary and completing a series of Judo training related tasks accumulating in players achieving the NVQ Level 3 Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance qualification.

AASE students also MUST undertake a ‘Technical Certificate’ – this is A/AS Levels or an equivalent for example a BTEC National Diploma. The BJA together with the AASE Judo Steering group are also working to fully integrate Judo coaching qualifications (UKCC L1 and UKCC L2) together with Referee/Officiating awards into the AASE programme to further enhance the development of the all round player.

Q) Who can apply for AASE?

  • Players MUST be between the ages of 16-19years
  • Players will preferably have a minimum of 4 GCSE’s grade A-C
  • NB Where players do not have grade A-C in English and Maths then further qualifications in Communication and numeracy at Level 2 will be available for   players to achieve.
  • Players should be of a reasonable Judo standard and have evidence of competing at Area / National level – (Please discuss this with the individual providers)
