The 2011 World Championships
draw was made on Monday, as the 15-strong Great Britain team learnt
their fate on the eve of the event’s anticipated start at the
Stade de Bercy in Paris.
An eye-catching 132 nations
will be represented with 880 athletes taking to the mat in what
is being talked about as one of the toughest judo competitions
in history.
On Tuesday, the opening
day of competition will see Ashley McKenzie and James Millar (both
-60kg) join Colin Oates and Craig Fallon (both -66kg) in action.
Ashley McKenzie will face
Kang Ho Song from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea while
James Millar meets Manolis Savvidis of Greece.
Colin Oates will take on
five-time World Cup medallist Pawel Zagrodnik of Poland as Craig
Fallon returns to the world stage against three-time senior national
champion Martin Ivanov from Bulgaria.
On Wednesday, Danny Williams
(-73kg), Sophie Cox (-52kg) and Gemma Howell (-57kg) will compete.
Danny Williams has received
a bye and will fight the winner of the opening round contest between
Georgia’s Tengizi Paposhvili and Guatemala’s Juan Mejia De La
Roca.
Sophie Cox battles Chi
Ieng Vong of Macau while Gemma Howell has received a bye and will
take on world number eight Morgane Ribout of France, the home
judoka having also received a bye.
On Thursday, Euan Burton
(-81kg), Sarah Clark and Faith Pitman (both -63kg) will look to
make their mark.
Euan Burton clashes against
Islam Bozbayev of Kazakhstan, Sarah Clark meets Fary Seye from
Senegal while Faith Pitman lines up against four-time World Cup
winner Munkhzaya Tsedevsuren of Mongolia.
Friday sees Winston Gordon
(-90kg) and Sally Conway (-70kg) take to the world stage.
Winston Gordon has received
a bye in the first round and challenges Rene De Urriola after
the Panama judoka was also spared a first round contest.
Sally Conway has also received
a bye and will face the winner of the clash between Rasa Sraka
of Slovenia and Phuong Trang Tran Thi of Vietnam.
The individual competition
concludes on Saturday with Karina Bryant, Sarah Adlington (both
+78kg) and James Austin (-100kg) bidding for success.
Karina Bryant faces reigning
South American champion Geovanna Blanco from Venezuela in the
second round as both judoka received a first round bye.
Sarah Adlington also jumps
straight into second round action agaist Beijing bronze medallist
and world number four Lucija Polavder of Slovenia.
James Austin challenges
reigning European Champion Amel Mekic of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The preliminary rounds
start at 08.00 GMT and run till 13:30 with the finals taking place
from 14.30 – 17.30.
