British squad selected for European Cadet Championships

A 16-strong British squad will compete at the 2011 European Cadets Championships in Cottonera, Malta from Friday 24 – Sunday 26 June.

The highly-anticipated showpiece is the continent’s premier event for cadets with Europe’s elite judoka under the age of 17 in action.

The British squad is made up of 10 English judoka and six from Scotland.

In the -44kg category Hayley Willis from Stratford Judo Club will compete with Natasha Stevens, from JC Osaka, fighting at -48kg.

SKK Judo Club trio Lucy Renshall and Bekky Livesey will contest the -52kg and -63kg categories while club colleague Jodie Myers battles at +70kg.

Just Judo’s Eilish Walker from Scotland sees action in the -57kg category.

Tonbridge Judo Club’s Katie-Jemima Yeats-Brown battles in the -63kg field while Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz from Enfield Judo Club will look to make a mark at -70kg.

Scotland’s Kieran Gehlan of JSJ Judo Club contests the -50kg category.

Pinewood Judo Club’s Dominic Naylor joins Ryecroft’s Sam Hall in the -55kg category while Scot Aiden Moffat of Tayside Judo Club and Redbridge’s Reece Sandy compete at -60kg.

Colin MacDonald of SJCA, Scotland, contests the -66kg category while compatriot Max Murphy of Pro Judo takes to the -73kg field. Fellow Scot Liam Donkin of Just Judo completes the selection at -81kg.

Bekky Livesey took seventh at the event in 2010 while Sam Hall finished in fifth-place.

Trevor Sitlinton, Head of the Delegation, said: “We’re really pleased with the squad we’re taking to Malta for what is one of the biggest events on the calendar young judoka.

"Our squad will go up against the best young talent Europe has to offer and it’s important to keep testing yourself against the best.

"We travel out to Malta on Wednesday and our players are looking forward to competing.”
