The draw for the 2010 World
Championships took place this morning at the Hilton Hotel, Tokyo.
Representatives from the
111 participating countries waited in anticipation to see who
their fighters would be drawn up against, and this is how it looks
for the Brits:
On Thursday 9th September,
the +100kg, -100kg, +78kg and -78kg weight categories will take
to the mat.
In the -100kg
weight category, James Austin will enter proceedings against Kyrgyzstan’s
Aleksei Taskin. The 24-year-old is a two-time medallist at Russia’s
U23 Championships.
Britain’s -78kg
judoka Scarlett Woolcock will face Slovenia’s 19-year-old
Ana Velensek who picked up a gold medal at the Sofia World Cup
this year. Woolcock is also in the same pool as the World no.1
Cline Lebrun of France.
Gemma Gibbons will fight Anastasiia
Matrosova of the Ukraine in the first round. The 28-year-old Ukrainian
won gold medals at the 2009 Madrid World Cup and Minsk World Cup,
and this year picked up a bronze medal at the Cairo World Cup.
In the +78kg competition
, Karina Bryant will face the 2007 World Championships
bronze medallist Carola Uilenhoed of the Netherlands in the first
round. Her 25-year-old opponent has more recently won a silver
medal at the 2010 Cairo World Cup and finished in 5 th place at
the 2010 Tunis Grand Prix.
If Bryant wins her first
fight and her old-rival Lucija Polavder of Slovenia wins her first
fight, she could be fighting the World no.1 in a World Championships
once again.
Sarah Adlington will fight
Ukraine’s Junior European no.1 Iryna Kindzerska. The 19-year-old’s
profile boasts a silver medal at the 2009 Junior World Championships,
a gold medal at the 2009 Junior European Championships. The pair
met at the 2010 Bucharest World Cup, where Adlington lost to her
in the semi-final.
On Friday 10th September
the -90kg, -81kg and -70kg weight categories will fight.
In
the -81kg competition , Euan
Burton will challenge fellow 31-year-old German Velazco
from Peru. The highly-regarded Peruvian won the South American
Games in March 2010 in his favoured weight class while also scooping
a silver medal in the open category.
In Pool C, Bath judoka
Tom Reed has received a bye and will open his tournament against
the winner of the meeting between Frenchman Antoine Jeannin and
China’s Maojian Li. Antoine Jeannin won the French Championships
in January 2010 while Li is an emerging 21-year-old.
Michael Horley
( -90kg) will open his account against Georgian Mindia
Bodaveli. His 27-year-old opponent won gold at his home nation’s
World Cup, held in Tbilisi in January 2010. Horley is also, in
the same pool at World ranked no.1 Takashi Ono, and could face
him if they both progress.
Two-time Olympian Winston
Gordon will fight Thailand’s little-known Wuttikrai Srisoprap.
In the -70kg competition
Megan Fletcher has received a bye and for her first contest, she
will fight the World ranked no.1, Anett Meszaros of Hungary. The
23-year-old Hungarian’s profile boasts gold medals at the 2010
Moscow Grand Slam and 2010 European Championships, a bronze medal
from the 2010 IJF Masters and was the 2009 World Championship
silver medallist.
Sally Conway has a bye
in the first round and will face either Patcharee Pichaipat (THA)
or Mi-Young Choi (JPN) in the second. If she progresses to the
third round, she could find herself up against Mina Watanabe of
Japan, who is ranked 6 th in the World, if Watanabe also wins
her first fight.
On Saturday 11th September,
the -73kg, -63kg and -57 competitions will get underway.
Britain’s
-73kg fighter, Daniel Williams, will go toe-to-toe
against Ukraine’s 27-year-old standout Volodymyr Soroka The 2009
European Champion underlined his credentials by taking gold at
May’s IJF Grand Prix in Tunisia.
In the -57kg weight
category, Gemma Howell has a bye in the first round and will fight
Jin-Sun Kim of South Korea (2008 Chinese Open bronze) in the second.
Faith Pitman (-63kg)
will fight World ranked no.9 Munkhzaya Tsedevsuren of
Mongolia in the first round. Her opponent has been making a name
on the IJF World circuit with 5 th places at the 2010 IJF Masters,
Tunis Grand Prix and Moscow Grand Slam
Sarah Clark has received
a bye and will face either Sara Collins (USA) or Japan’s Miki
Tanaka, who won a bronze medal at the 2010 IJF Masters, in her
first contest.
On Sunday 12th September,
the -60kg, -66kg, -52kg and -48kg competitors will fight.
Ashley McKenzie
( -60kg) has received a bye and will meet Ukraine’s 22-year-old
Anatoliy Laskuta in his opening contest. The Ukrainian recently
took a silver medal at the 2010 Cairo World Cup and was a 2007
Junior European silver medallist.
Pool C will see James Millar
take on the Czech Republic’s former U23 European Championships
champion, Pavel Petrikov. The 24-year-old claimed top honours
in the Romanian and Estonian World Cups in 2009. Millar
could meet Hiroaki Hiraoka of Japan, the World ranked no.2, if
the both progress to the third round.
In the -66kg weight
category, Colin Oates has received a bye and will open his campaign
against the World ranked no.2, Russia’s Alim Gadano. The impressive
Russian won a World bronze medal in 2008 and came 5 th in the
2009 World Championships, more recently he won a bronze medal
at the 2010 Moscow Grand Slam, and won a gold medal at the 2010
Rio de Janeiro Grand Slam.
In the -48kg competition,
Kimberley Renicks has a bye in the first round and could face
either Elena Moretti, Italy’s 2009 U23 Champion who Renicks has
beat at the 2009 GB World Cup or Amani Khalfaoui (TUN) in the
second round, depending on who wins out of the two. Renicks could
face the World ranked no.5 Jung-Yeon Chung of South Korea if both
players progress to the third round.
In the -52kg competition,
Sophie Cox will fight unranked fighter Atefa Hussaini (AFG) in
the first round.
Kelly Edwards has a bye
in the first round and will face the not so well known Margarita
Filippova (TKM) in the second round.
The Open weight category
fights will be drawn on Saturday, and competition will take place
on Monday 13th September.
