An 81-strong British team
has been selected to compete in the 2010 Sainsbury’s UK School
Games judo competition, held from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 September
at Gateshead International Stadium Athletics Hall.
The young athletes will
be representing England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales
at the competition and include a mixture of athletes who are returning
to the Sainsbury's UK School Games and those competing for the
first time.
Last year saw England top
the judo medal table with an impressive 21 medals overall. Wales
finished in second place with 12 medals, Scotland came third with
a total of 7 medals and Northern Ireland finished fourth with
a win of 5 medals.
Scott McCarthy, CEO of
the British Judo Association, commented on the announcement.
"The 2010 Sainsbury's
UK School Games provides a great event for our future Olympians
to compete in a multisport event against the best competitors
of school age within the UK. The athletes that have been selected
to compete in this year's event have excelled within their given
Home Country and should be proud to be selected for this prestigious
event, well done to all of them.
"Reference must be
made to Demi Brooks who was crowned champion in the u70kg category
in Bath & Bristol in 2008 and in Swansea in 2009; she will
be going for three in a row in the North East in 2010.
"As the excitement
for this year's event builds as the event draws closer, I wish
all of the competitors the best of luck for the 2010 Sainsbury's
UK School Games."
The UK School Games gives
young people from all over the UK the chance to compete in a multi-sport
event like the Olympic Games or the Commonwealth Games. Competitors
experience an opening and closing ceremony, mock doping control
and accommodation in a Games village, as well as the event itself.
The Youth Sport Trust are
responsible for staging the Games, which includes Judo, Table
Tennis , Athletics, Gymnastics, Hockey, Badminton, Swimming, Fencing,
Volleyball and Track Cycling.
The first ever UK School
Games was hosted in 2006 by Glasgow followed by Coventry in 2007
and Bath in 2008. The Youth Sport Trust secured £2.3 million National
Lottery funding from the Big Lottery fund to support the Games
until 2011.
The judo competition gets
underway at 11:00am on Friday 3 September.
