On Saturday and Sunday
(9th -10th October) Sheffield will host the 2010 British Judo
Championships, which will see up to 750 judo players from the
ages of 12- 18 years competing for National titles.
The Championships, which
are supported by Sheffield City Council’s Major Sports Events
Unit, are being held at iceSheffield for the sixth consecutive
year.
The Olympic-sized rink
at iceSheffield will be boarded over with judo mats for two days
of non-stop action as some of the nation’s top young players do
battle.
British Judo is inviting
spectators for the opportunity to watch some of Great Britain’s
top young sporting talent in action over seven mat areas.
The tournament is categorised
into weight and age groups, with gold medallists becoming National
Champions. Each of the BJA Areas and Home Countries hosted a trials
event to select the top four players from each weight category,
who are then eligible for entry to the British Championships.
The
English gold medallists take the first steps towards a place on
the England Programme. This programme aims to prepare players
for progression up the World Class Performance pathway, with the
ultimate goal of winning medals at the World Championships and
Olympic Games.
The competitors will travel
to the Championships from throughout England, Northern Ireland,
Scotland and Wales. Many players will have competed in this event
before, returning once again to fight the top players from across
Great Britain.
Densign White, Chairman
of the British Judo Association said, “I am delighted that this
event once again has a high number of competitors.
“The young talent taking
part in the Championships weekend may be taking their first steps
on a journey to success at the highest level. To have the chance
to compete in such a fabulous venue will be a fantastic experience
and one that they will never forget.”
Mandy Parker, general manager
of iceSheffield, which is operated by Sheffield International
Venues (SIV) said: “This is a fantastic event which we are delighted
to be hosting once again as it really acknowledges iceSheffield
as a world-class facility.
“This is a great opportunity
for youngsters who travel from across the UK to gain high level
competition experience here at iceSheffield, and the covered Olympic-sized
ice pads provide a great sporting arena for an event which is
a must for any judo or combat enthusiast.”
Tickets are available from
the main reception at iceSheffield priced at £10 for an adult
day ticket and £15 for an adult weekend pass, and a concession
day ticket at £5 with a weekend pass at £7.50.
