Final places secured by Brits

The British team secured three final and three repechage finals on the second day of the 2009 GB World Cup.

Euan Burton and Tom Reed will take on each other in the final of the -81kg category after both Brits secured their places in the final of the -81kg category

Reed progressed to the semi-final after scoring a yuko in his semi-final match against Murat Khabachirov (Russia).

Burton won his place in the final after beating Travis Stevens (USA) by a waza-ari.

Sarah Adlington has progressed to the final of the +78kg weight category after seeing off the challenge Emillie Waldet and Beatrice Rietz.

Adlington beat Waldet (France) by an ippon, a waza-ari and a yuko. In her second fight against Germany’s Rietz she won by a yuko.

Olympian Peter Cousins made it through to the repechage finals after just missing a place in the -100kg category. Cousins was just beaten by a yuko point by Dino Pfeiffer (Germany) in his semi-final and will face

Frederic Stiegelmann (France) as he fights for a bronze medal.

Chris Sherrington will be have the chance to fight it out for the bronze medal after winning his first round repechage fight against fellow Brit Joe Delahey in the +100kg category. Sherrington won the match with an ippon on his team-mate.

In the -70kg weight category Sally Conway and Gemma Gibbons were beaten in their first round fights to miss their chances of progressing through the rounds.

Conway lost to Germany’s Barbara Bandel by a waza-ari and Iljuana Marzok (Germany) beat Gibbons by a yuko.

Adam Bick lost his repechage match to Dennis Huck of Germany by two waza-aris.

Megan Flecther made it through to the repechage but lost her first fight to Bandel by two yukos.

Both Jermaine McIntosh and Peter Lomax (-100kg) suffered defeats in their first fights. McIntosh lost to Russia’s Zafar Makhmadov through ippon.

Lomax started his match well after gaining a waza-ari and a yuko but was thrown by Balint Farkas (Hungary) for ippon.

Theo Spalding-McIntosh (-100kg) lost in the first round of the repechage against Dmitriy Renev (Russia).

In the -81kg category Gary Hall was defeated by Germany’s Nick Hein as he was thrown for an ippon just over half way through the first round match.

Amersham-based Caroline Kinnane (-78kg) was beaten in the first round by Canada’s Amy Cotton. She lost to a waza-ari but had gained a yuko early on. Sian Wilson reached the first round of the repechage but lost to Annika Heise (Germany).

Andrew Burns, Luke Taylor, James Austin and Michael Horley went out in their first fights. Taylor Austin and Horley all went down to ippon while Burns lost to a waz-ari and a yuko.

Karl Etherington missed his chance to make the second round of the +100kg category after being beaten by an ippon by Thomas Sinou (France). Matthew Clempner, Joe Delahey and Chris Sherrington were all beaten

in their second round fights but progressed through to the repechage.
