Britain won 10 medals
at the 2009 British Open, which took place at the K2, Crawley
at the weekend.
The host nation finished
second in the medal table behind Spain who won 14 medals.
Britain won four gold
medals, one silver and five bronze medals. France, Belgium and
the Netherlands finished third, fourth and fifth in the medal
table respectively.
British golds were won
by Ashley McKenzie (-60kg), Winston Gordon (-90kg and pictured),
Peter Lomax (-100kg) and Karina Bryant (+78kg).
Six-times World medallist
Bryant and European medallist Winston Gordon, who were both making
their first appearance since the Beijing Games last summer, seemed
to be untroubled on their route to the gold medal spots.
Ashley McKenzie, who
was the only reigning British Open Champion defending their title
going into the event, looked at ease throughout the day and retains
his title in the -60kg weight division.
Peter Lomax, who missed
out on the medals in 2008, looked classy in the final beating
Santiago Diaz Lopez of Spain.
Britain’s Becky Dunning
won silver in the -52kg weight category after being unable to
compete in the final due to injury.
Caroline Kinnane (+78kg),
Ruslan Zaboloynij (-100kg), Zviad Tsiklauri (+100kg), Sam Dunkley
(-66kg) and Iain Feenan (-73kg) won the British bronze medals.
Following the event
the High Performance Directorate co-opted Adam Bick (-81kg), Bobby
Rich (-90kg), Denny Roberts (-90kg), and Caroline Kinane (-78kg)
to the senior British squad, whilst Ben Guest (-66kg) was co-opted
on to the junior squad.
18 nations in total
competed over the two days.
