BUILDING THE SYSTEM FOR LONDON 2012 AND BEYOND

BRITISH JUDO - HEAD COACH (The salary will reflect the experience and high level expertise of the individual appointed)

British Judo is currently seeking an experienced high level international performance and technical coach to undertake the role of Head Coach and to help recruit, develop and manage the coaching team within the Performance Directorate and newly established British Judo Performance Institute. The Head Coach will play a significant role in the development of the performance systems as British Judo gears up towards a 2012 Home Olympic cycle and will be capable of delivering programmes, which can consistently generate multiple Olympic and Paralympic medals in 2012 and at future Olympic and Paralympic Games. The role will involve closely working with the Director of World Class Programmes and World Class Operations Manager to contribute to developing an integrated Performance Player Pathway and to ensure robust talent selection and talent confirmation process are in place as players are inducted onto Institute programmes.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of ten years experience in the world class arena and a proven track record of developing successful players at world and continental level, a sound knowledge and understanding of modern judo training methods, plus effective application of ‘Judo specific’ sport science and sports medicine and integration of specialist support into player training plans. The Head Coach will also have the capacity to individually coach players, but in the main be responsible for ensuring coaches are providing the best possible coaching and technical support, as well as being effective in their planning, implementation and review processes, both on and off the mat. The successful candidate will have excellent ‘people’ and management skills, be adept at finding innovative solutions and have a holistic philosophy to coaching. The Head Coach will also be responsible for developing high performance coaches and providing professional development support programmes to assist with this process within British Judo.

A degree or professional qualification in a sports related discipline will be desirable and a current coaching qualification will be essential, as is the ability to communicate at a high level, both orally and in writing. The ability to deliver technical workshops and presentations is important. Computer literacy, a driving license and full passport are also essential and a CRB check will be a condition of employment. This post will be full time from 1 April 2009 as it will be aligned to the next UK Sport funding cycle. However arrangements for contract work prior to this date may be possible depending on the successful candidate’s circumstances.

The normal place of work will be the British Judo Performance Institute at Dartford, although work may also be required at other Home Country Performance Centres and at Bath as part of the British Judo partnership with the Performance Research and Development Academy. Significant travel overseas is likely to be required.
