BJA Club Recognition Scheme goes from strength to strength

The end of the year 2006 saw a record number of British Judo Association member clubs signing up to the BJA Club Recognition Scheme

During the year an astonishing sixty-three clubs signed up to the scheme with an amazing twenty-eight clubs gaining the Club Recognition Scheme Bronze award, which incorporates the Sport England Clubmark Award the nationally recognised mark of a quality and well-run sports club.

Accredited clubs up and down the country are now taking advantage of the benefits the bronze award brings, increased membership through recognition by schools and local authorities, reduced rates for coach education courses run by County Sports Partnerships, easier access to local funding, these are just a few of the benefits available to the clubs that are accredited.

Alan Roberts from Dartford Judo Club summed it up by saying:

“As soon as the Club Mark Award became established, we made it our immediate goal to work towards achieving the award.

Since our successful Award, we have come to realise how important the Club Mark is to Local Authorities, and Sports Centres, and as it grows in the general public's awareness, how important it will be to promote your Club as one that holds this Award, setting it above the many other Clubs still to gain the recognition.

Like any 'Kite Mark', it is seen as an acceptable standard, and I can assure any Clubs still not working towards it, that the work involved in achieving the Award is well worth while, in the extra respect and credibility that is gained on being a 'Club Mark Club'

The other very positive aspect is the 'looking inwards' at your own club that you do, in making sure you have all the required blocks in place. Even as a large club, we were surprised at the many areas we did not currently cover, and now feel more able to promote our sport, having gone through the challenge of this Award.”

Contrary to popular belief the Club Recognition Scheme is not just for elite clubs that produce nationally recognised players but is also for recreationally based clubs and demonstrates that accredited clubs are safe, friendly and well run environments and that parents and guardians will be confident that their children will be safe whilst enjoying the sport of their choice.
