Some
of the best of British talent will compete in the 2006 British
Closed Championships, which will take place at the English Institute
of Sport - Sheffield on the 2nd & 3rd of December.
The
Championships are a highlight of the domestic judo calendar where
players in each weight category compete to become British Champion.
Saturday
2nd December will see 200 competitors in the junior event, while
the senior event will take place on Sunday 3 rd December and will
have over 210 entries.
On
Sunday those competing will include Athens Olympian and current
European Champion Sarah Clark (-63kg), European bronze medallists'
Peter Cousins (-90kg) and Euan Burton (-81kg), Commonwealth Champion
Samantha Lowe (-70kg), British Champion Matthew Purrsey (-73kg)
and Olympian and three times European medallist Michelle Rogers
(-78kg) to name a few.
All
six were part of the team who recently returned from the Chinese
Open in Qindao. It was the first time that a British delegation
had ever competed in China and they won three medals – silver
from Peter Cousins while Michelle Rogers and Euan Burton won bronzes.
The team travelled to China to experience first hand the
complexities and challenges of an Olympic Games in Beijing.
The
junior event on Saturday 1st December also promises to deliver
an exciting event with Britain’s younger Olympic hopefuls on display.

will be a fantastic opportunity to watch judo at its best in Britain.
Some of our top British stars who often compete outside of this
country will be in Sheffield and I am sure they will be looking
forward to competing on home soil.”

development of judo in the build up to the 2012 Olympic Games

players to the city.
“Hosting the Championships
will also add to Sheffield’s experience
in staging major national and international events and enhance
the city’s growing reputation as a nationally recognised centre
for sport.”

the sport’s most talented players including Olympic and European
medallists.

hall will provide a great competition base for top level competitors
looking forward to the Beijing Olympics and the sport’s most promising
young players aiming to gain experience
of an elite and competitive environment.”
Tickets
are available on the door priced £6 adults and £3 concessions
(per day).
The
event starts at 9am both days – entry allowed throughout the day.
