OLYMPIC JUDO STARS IN ACTION IN SHEFFIELD

Some of the best of British talent will compete in the 2006 British Closed Championships, which will take place at the English Institute of Sport - Sheffield on the 2nd & 3rd of December.

The Championships are a highlight of the domestic judo calendar where players in each weight category compete to become British Champion.

Saturday 2nd December will see 200 competitors in the junior event, while the senior event will take place on Sunday 3 rd December and will have over 210 entries.

On Sunday those competing will include Athens Olympian and current European Champion Sarah Clark (-63kg), European bronze medallists' Peter Cousins (-90kg) and Euan Burton (-81kg), Commonwealth Champion Samantha Lowe (-70kg), British Champion Matthew Purrsey (-73kg) and Olympian and three times European medallist Michelle Rogers (-78kg) to name a few.

All six were part of the team who recently returned from the Chinese Open in Qindao. It was the first time that a British delegation had ever competed in China and they won three medals – silver from Peter Cousins while Michelle Rogers and Euan Burton won bronzes. The team travelled to China to experience first hand the complexities and challenges of an Olympic Games in Beijing.

The junior event on Saturday 1st December also promises to deliver an exciting event with Britain’s younger Olympic hopefuls on display.

Commenting Scott McCarthy, British Judo Chief Executive said: “This weekend will be a fantastic opportunity to watch judo at its best in Britain. Some of our top British stars who often compete outside of this country will be in Sheffield and I am sure they will be looking forward to competing on home soil.”

Cllr Robert MacDonald, Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Culture and Planning at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield is committed to the development of judo in the build up to the 2012 Olympic Games and we are really looking forward to welcoming the sport’s top players to the city.

“Hosting the Championships will also add to Sheffield’s experience in staging major national and international events and enhance the city’s growing reputation as a nationally recognised centre for sport.”

Lorenzo Clark, General Manager at EISS, said: “The event is one of the highlights of the domestic judo calendar and will feature a full spectrum of the sport’s most talented players including Olympic and European medallists.

“Our state-of-the-art judo hall will provide a great competition base for top level competitors looking forward to the Beijing Olympics and the sport’s most promising young players aiming to gain experience of an elite and competitive environment.”

Tickets are available on the door priced £6 adults and £3 concessions (per day).

The event starts at 9am both days – entry allowed throughout the day.
