Britain has won three medals at the
Chinese Open, which took place on Saturday 11th November in Qingdao.
Peter Cousins won silver in the –90kg
weight category. Bronzes were won by Michelle Rogers in
the –78kg weight category, and Euan Burton in the –81kg weight
category.
Matthew Purssey narrowly
missed out on a medal in the –81kg weight category finishing in
5th place, as did Samantha Lowe in the –70kg category. Sarah Clark
finish 7th in the –63kg weight category.
It is the first time that
a British judo team has ever competed in the Chinese Open Championships.
Competition was particularly strong at the event as the Championships
marked the first Olympic qualification event for Asia.
The British team are staying
on in Qingdao to take part in a training camp before moving on
to Beijing to see the planned Olympic venues.
All six players in China
are UK Sport funded athletes. They are:
Euan Burton (The Edinburgh
Club)
Peter Cousins (JSC Judo
Club - Purfleet)
Matthew Purssey (The Edinburgh
Club)
Sarah Clark (The Edinburgh
Club)
Samantha Lowe (Camberley
Judo Club)
Michelle Rogers (The Edinburgh
Club)
Craig Fallon had to withdraw
from the trip due to injury.
The team return to the
UK on Monday 20th November.
Special thanks must go
to the British Olympic Association who have assisted with the
coordination of this trip.
