English Areas Commission

Establish and operate a communication policy for the English Areas & Clubs.

Make recommendation to the BJA BoD from the English Areas or Clubs on all matters pertaining to English Judo.

Recommend to the BoD selection criteria for English teams and officials and actual team members.

Responsible for organisation of an English Team programme (in Commonwealth Games and/or Commonwealth Tournament)

Makes recommendations to the Board of Directors on financial policy matters.

Maintains an overview of the financial position of the British Judo Association.

Pursues and evaluates methods of maintaining and increasing income.

Inclusion Commission

The British Judo Association (BJA) is committed to ensuring that everyone is given the opportunity to participate in the sport of judo by removing barriers, widening opportunities and increasing choice. The Inclusion Commission has been appointed by the Board of Directors to deliver this commitment and ensure that people with disabilities or who are disadvantaged enjoy the same sporting opportunities and choices as their non disabled or disadvantaged counter parts.

Chair   

The meeting will be chaired by a member of the British Judo Association nominated by the Board of Directors.

Frequency

Meetings of the Inclusion Commission will be held at least 2 times in any yearly cycle.

Membership

Membership of the commission will consist of a minimum of seven members including the Chair.

Remit

  • To promote the grassroots development of disability judo by working closely with relevant agencies to help build capacity at a local level
  • To promote grassroots development of disability judo by working closely with the British Judo Association Home Countries, Areas, member clubs and partners.
  • To increase participation in the sport of judo and make training, competition and international opportunities accessible
  • To promote inclusive judo through the provision of information and signposting
  • To widen access to judo for under-represented groups
  • To increase capacity (referees, table officials and coaches)
  • To report on at lease monthly cycle to the meeting of the Board of Directors
  • To work with technical, development and coaching officers of the BJA to initiate implement and deliver all technical matters
  • To deliver national competitions and support the domestic competition programme
  • To oversee the production of the Commissions Business Plan and Equality Action Plan
  • To liaise with other Commissions on matters of mutual concern
  • To have representation at national and domestic technical workshops and seminars
  • To produce reports with recommendations as requested by the Board of Directors on any related issues.

Masters Commission

Aims:

  • To encourage opportunities for participation for all grades of players
  • To ensure that information about these activities is readily accessible
  • To develop a positive image for masters judo
  • To inform, advise and make recommendations to the Board of Directors of the British Judo Association in regards to Masters Judo

National Technical Officials Commission

Co-ordinates and implement the National Competition Programme.

Ensures that the best practices of inclusion and equity are practiced at all BJA competitions.

To raise the standards of all competition officials by implementing a comprehensive recruitment and training programme.

To work with key partners to improve all aspects of competition formats and structures to include health & safety, age banding, management and promotion.

To investigate and evaluate the possibility of hosting major international tournaments in the UK.

Appoints Competition Officials.

Arranges and/or supervises all BJA National Competitions

Promotions/Gradings Commission

Reviews and refine the processes for assessing BJA members’ technical and contest ability in order to award grades fairly and credibly.

Ensure that accurate records are kept of members’ grades by the D of E and NDGR.

Consults with and inform Examiners and D of E regarding changes to the promotions structure of the BJA.

Provides inclusive opportunities for all BJA members to gain promotion as specified by the BJA equity plan.

To be mindful of health and safety issues regarding the assessment of BJA members for promotions.

Referees Commission

Maintains current knowledge of contest rules of the International Judo Federation and current IJF & EJU interpretation of same.

Ensures that rules and interpretations are disseminated in a timely and comprehensive manner to relevant Commissions, Area refereeing representatives and senior referees, BJA Officials and members.

Promotes the recruitment and ongoing training and development of referees at Junior and Senior level.

Monitor and revise relevant examination papers for Refereeing & Contest Rules awards.

Monitors and develop quality standards for Junior and Senior referees.

To provide training, support and opportunities for referees to advance to the EJU and IJF levels.

To select and appoint all referees to attend international tournaments up to European and Junior World’s levels.

To promote the understanding of contest rules by placing articles in relevant publications, and organising seminars and workshops.

Self Defence Commission

The British Judo Association (BJA) is committed to ensuring that everyone is given the opportunity to participate in the sport of judo by removing barriers, widening opportunities and increasing choice.

The Self Defence Commission has been appointed by the Board of Directors to deliver this commitment and ensure that all our members enjoy the same sporting opportunities and choices.

Further that in delivering Self Defence within the association and throughout its partner organisations, we maximise inward investment and take every step to ensure "best practice".

Chair

The meeting will be chaired by an appointed member of the BJA Board of Directors.

Frequency

The Commission will meet a minimum of twice each year.

Membership

The Commission will consist of a minimum of 6 members including the Chairperson

Quorum

The meeting quorum for voting purposes shall be the chairperson and a minimum of 3 ordinary members.

Voting Rules

Any decision, to be valid, will require a majority vote. In the case of a tie the chairperson shall have the right to cast the deciding vote.

Review

The Terms of reference are by no means definitive. They will be reviewed and updated as appropriate on an annual cycle.

Commission Remit

  • To report into the Board of Directors of the BJA as required. To produce reports with recommendations as requested by the BJA Board of Directors on any relevant issues.
  • To support the core activities of British Judo so far as they relate to self defence e.g. Goshin jutsu and kime-no-kata
  • To ensure that the activity of the Commission is developed throughout the United Kingdom and is appropriate to home country regulations and statutes.
  • Organise the structure and technical content of all Commission programmes.
  • Encourage the growth of BJA membership, when applicable, amongst those participating in programmes agreed and implemented by the Commission.
  • Protect and project a positive image of the BJA generally throughout all of the *Commissions programmes.
  • Publicise the activity of Commission throughout the United Kingdom and with the particular use of the Matside magazine and the on-line BJA Newsletter.
  • Develop programmes that will be BJA Accredited.
  • Arrange coach development and coaching courses in order to develop the activity of Commission throughout the entire United Kingdom.
  • Act as an awarding body to qualify coaches’ at all relevant levels as appropriate to the Commission business.
  • Authorised to set levels of fees applicable to all aspects of the Commissions programmes and any Commission activities.
  • Determine the overall range and nature of activities that the BJA will engage within the Commissions programmes.
  • Control the quality of coaches, accredited to deliver the Commissions programmes for both BJA and non-BJA members.
  • Ensure inclusivity of access along with fairness and equality of treatment in all programmes and for all participants.
  • Maintain links to all relevant bodies both internal and external to the BJA
