Since the turn of the year,
The British Judo Association, Sport
England , British
Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS)
and Further and Higher Education Institutions from across England,
have coalesced to create new, dynamic, and effective partnerships
in the delivery of Judo to both College and University students.
There are just over 3.2 million full-time
Further and Higher Education students in England. However, nearly
2.3 million of these students are not currently meeting the Sport
England benchmark standard of doing sport three times a week,
for at least 30 minutes per session.

It is hoped that through forging such
partnerships, this will contribute to addressing growth in student
participation, and help to achieve Sport England’s target to get
300,000 students from across Further and Higher Education, doing
more sport by 2012/13 — a significant contribution to the Nation’s
overall one million target.
Furthermore, the British
Judo Association believes that, by working with this independent
and diverse sector, we will increase our collective impact in
delivering our interventions, and help grow participation significantly
within our own sport.
Through working more closely
with such partners, it is hoped that we will achieve the following
shared goals:
Raise
the profile of Further and Higher Education Judo;
Recognise
the sector’s wider contribution to the sport in enhancing
our coaching and volunteer workforce;
Contribute
directly to both institution and sector wide outcomes.
In addition to our partnership
plans, the BJA has recently launched a variety of support mechanisms,
through the form of promotional literature, incentive schemes
and marketing support, as we endeavour to achieve our goals:
Higher Education:

University
Judo Club Development Handbook
This handbook has been
produced to assist students and University Athletic Unions, who
are in the position of running a judo club within a University
or FE College, or who would like to form one in their particular
institution. The handbook incorporates all aspects of establishing,
running, developing and sustaining a University Judo club, and
has been endorsed by the BJA.
Dr. Tony Buley, the author,
has over 50 years of involvement with University Judo having originally
joined the Oxford University Club as a beginner in 1958, becoming
Secretary the following year and President in 1962. In 1988 he
became the Senior Member and is now Chairman of Oxford Judo which
is a close federation of the Oxford City and University Clubs
with a joint current membership of circa 150.

University Judo
Club Development Conference
On Thursday 1 July,
2010, the inaugural University Judo Club Development Conference
was held in the Sir John Beckworth building at Loughborough University.
The event, which is endorsed
by both Sport England and BUCS, and will be hosted on an annual
basis, endeavours to provide the University sector with an opportunity
to engage with the BJA and encourage best practice in both the
delivery and development of University Judo.
The day allows for our
partners from across Higher Education to experience an array of
interactive student tailored services, with workshops delivered
by our Development, Coaching, Volunteer, Membership, Commercial
and Marketing Departments, to ensure that our network of University
Judo Clubs receive the support they both require and deserve,
to sustain both the quality, enjoyment and continuity of University
Judo.
Further Education:
The BJA are supporting
a number of innovative programmes delivering Judo as a core strand
on a variety of Further Education courses. From A/S Level and
A-Level Physical Education to BTEC Sports and Uniformed Public
Services, Further Education Institutions are recognising Judo
as a unique sport which is able to both achieve the learning outcomes
of certain course requisites, in addition to equipping their students
with the many other benefits deriving from a provision for Judo.
If you are interested
in receiving more information as to how Judo can be implemented
into such a curriculum delivery, then please contact luke.farrugia@britishjudo.org.uk
