- Public Relations
Neglected area in the past
We have neglected this area in the past. The profile of
the BJA –
internally and externally – is poor
No easy answers - hard work & creativity
There are no easy answers in PR – hard work and
creativity are key.
Emma Reed – August 2003
Our first PRO, Emma Reed, was appointed in August. She
has had an
immediate impact – and I am confident that she will
have a much
bigger impact in the near term.
Improved profile will improve our ability to raise
income levels,
attract players
We need to improve our profile – and subsequently
our ability to attract
players and raise income potential – specifically
a corporate partner
We also see the PRO as a key player in our internal
communications – updating the website continuously
and authoring the e-newsletter.
Good start with World Championships and British
events
We had a great start with the World Championships.
PR programme in place internal Communications
& Perceptions
We now have a developing Communications Plan, internal
and external, and you will see significant progress
on this front.

- Events
Jo Duff – March 2003
As stated we created the new position of Events Manager
to support our varied events
from the Head Office.
Jo Duff was hire in March
2003 ago to fill this role and she is doing a great
job
to date – and I confident we will see more of
the same going forward.
Jo will work
closely with our high level volunteers, providing a
central planning and
coordination role.
EJU Congress 2003
Upcoming events include the EJU Congress in December
in London.
European Team Championships – 6 December
2003 in London
The European Men’s Team Championships in the Brentford
Fountain Leisure Centre in December.
British Open, Junior British Open & British
National Finals
The other major events: British
Open, Junior British Open, National Finals (senior and
age bands). Next year we are hosting the European Open
Masters and Kata Championships.

Complaints & Conduct
Panel
Initiated in spring 2003
This group was formed by the Board in the spring of
2003, after a lengthy selection process.
Keith Eldridge, Chair & 5 high level investigators
The Chairman of the Panel is Mr Keith Eldridge, a Senior
London Metropolitan Police Officer. Keith and his team
all have much experience and this group is off to a
great start.
Cases investigated: 13
Cases adjudicated: 6
Child Protection Issues: 3
Resolved: 1
Adjudicated: 1
Keith also serves on the Child Protection Policy Advisory
Group with Mark Beecher and Julie Moores.
Unfortunately we have received
three reports of issues involving children.
One case was resolved, one was adjudicated and one is
still pending.
Great start for the Complaints and Conduct panel and
we look forward to much more good work in the future.

- Thanks
I would like to thank the
Board of Directors for their tireless work on your behalf,
the Commissions who have a hugely important role that
is very time consuming
Volunteers
– On behalf of the BOD may I thank the many hundreds
of volunteers that make it all happen on a daily basis
Staff –
we have a great team in place, the chemistry is good,
and we are well placed to deliver the goods. It iw a
great opportunity to work in a sporting body but the
pressures are unique and substantial – may I thank
the troops for doing a great job
Finally –
no meeting would be complete without thanking our partners,
UK Sport and Sport England. They obviously give us funding
and it is essential but it would be fair to say that
equally they are very active in planning and modernising
all NGBs. We appreciate their support on many fronts.
