Wirrall Judo Club received
their clubmark bronze award on Tuesday December 14.
The clubmark award, which
has three levels in bronze, silver and gold, was introduced by
Sport England in 2002. The scheme recognises and accredits clubs
that are committed to providing safe, effective and child friendly
environments for young people.
The flourishing club,
who opened in 2000 with just 14 beginners, now boasts over 150
members and is one of the top sports clubs in the region.
British Judo Development
Officer Dave Duffy and Techincal Officer Kerry Finney made the
clubmark presentation as members of the club assembled to share
the success.

Club Head Coach Chris Soakell
said: “I am proud of the success of our club
but even more proud of the friendly and welcoming environment
all visitors and members, regardless of age or ability, enjoy
at any of our sessions or events.
“I look forward to helping
the club and its members continue to grow and develop.
“I opened Wirral Judo Club
in 2000, we ran one night a week on a small, temporary mat area.
The club soon became popular and with the help of parents, volunteers
and bags of enthusiasm from the children it has grown to nearly
200 members.
“There are 11 classes that
cover all abilities from total beginners to experienced competitors;
we currently have three members who are part of the England development
squad.
Chris also believes the
club’s events and international engagements are a top attraction
for aspiring and emerging judoka.
“We organise many events
throughout the year both judo and non-judo so everyone can join
in. We regularly travel to competitions and training events throughout
the country and for the more advanced we travel abroad to countries
like France, Belgium, Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands.”
Wirral Judo Club train
at Woodchurch Leisure Centre, Woodchurch, Wirral CH49 8EU. Training
takes place on a Monday, Tuesday and Friday.
