Surrey’s thriving Westcroft
Judo Club won a remarkable 24 medals from 28 competitors at the
London Youth Games on Saturday, June 19th, at the Crystal Palace
National Sports Centre.
The family-run outfit,
which were founded in January 1996, traditionally provide a very
talented contingent of fighters for the Sutton borough team who
are routinely among the front-runners at London’s annual multi-sport
showpiece.
Sutton starred at the Games
- which are Europe’s largest annual youth sports event - by winning
the girls category, finishing second in the boys and first overall
to repeat last years success. Their emphatic overall victory was
sealed by a breathtaking medal return of nine gold medals, six
silver and nine bronze.
Club coach Andy Ede, a
respected 4th Dan, was ecstatic with the performances of the club’s
highly-talented youngsters.
“I am very proud of these
excellent results, the players are a pleasure to work with they
trained exceptionally hard for this event and produced moments
of inspirational judo,” he said.
Gold medals went to Gemma
Dickinson, Shermaine Henlon, Leanne Henlon, Katie McKenna and
Ayben Mertdag. The boys topped the rostrum on four ocasions courtesy
of Lee Aldridge, Tim-Philip Ebel, Mitchel Kayne and Cameron Ogles.
Silver medals were claimed
by Emma Jeffries, Ellie Johncey, Katie Langford and Carys Williams
while Alex Cummings and Oliver Buitrago provided a pair of second-placed
finishes for the boys.
One bronze for the girls
went to Jessica Bridgeford while eight boys secured the final
medal spot. Francis de Lima, Callum Ogles, Jordan Mulley, Elliott
Williams and Max Webster along with Ben Cummings, John Hisee and
Alex Roe each won bronze.
Max Lee Sang, Jordan Gillfillian,
Henry Calderon and Stuart Fold also competed.
Westcroft Judo Club train
at the Phoenix Centre, Westcroft Leisure Centre, Cheam Leisure
Centre, St Paul’s Church Hall and their dojo at Carshalton Boys
