University of Hertfordshire Judo Club up and running

University  of Hertfordshire Judo Club graded 16 students to 6 kyu on Tuesday 5 April after only being introduced to the sport in February.

The newly-formed club, which is based at the Herts Sports Village, came about as a result of a close partnership between the BJA, Herts Sports and University of Hertfordshire.

British Judo's Student Voucher Scheme enabled the students to take up judo at an affordable cost and commence their judo journey.

With over 30 students taking part in sessions over the past eight weeks the club is going from strength to strength as they now begin to form their committee and affiliate to the Athletic Union at the University.

Even more pleasing was the local link built up between local clubs with Marshalswick Judo Club coach Doug Seabrook heading up the training sessions, supported by Tim Frost and an array of guest coaches from Marshalswick. The club have also kindly offered to open up their training sessions to all the students so they can continue training throughout the summer.

Andrew Wilesmith, British Judo's Eastern Regional Development Officer, said, “The setup of this club and the whole project has been a perfect example of a partnership working the way everyone talks about. This is what happens when the NGB, CSP and local clubs join forces and work well together.

"Herts Sports have been amazing through this whole process and really been the catalyst to ensuring this works. As a result all the students have entered the sport and that’s what it’s all about”.

Will Hollyer, Sports Project Officer for Herts Sports CSP, said: “It has been an excellent project and we have a real opportunity to ensure it grows and becomes even more successful”.

The club will now look to grow on their success in the new academic year as they become a fully-fledged University club recognised by the British Universities and College Sport.

With 20 licensed players in the club and two coaches they are now looking to get to the next level.
