On Saturday 5 February
the largest event on the University of Warwick Judo Club calendar
took place as their academic peers from Bristol, York and Sheffield
all took part in the popular student's competition.
A 25-strong team from
Warwick led a total entry of over 120 judoka to make the event
one of the biggest student run competitions in the Midlands area.
Both team and individual
categories featured with the latter including novices (green belt
and below) and advanced (blue belt and above). The University
sees the event as the perfect opportunity for those with just
a term’s experience to take part in a friendly competition, where
beginners can compete on a level playing field.

Now in its fourth year,
the competition has grown from strength to strength, this year
attracting names such as Joyce Heron, Fitzroy Davis and Dave Nicholls
who all presented medals to the competitors.
The day was divided into
two main events, with the men and women’s team competitions taking
place in the morning and the individual competitions taking place
in the afternoon. Overall Warwick enjoyed great success across
the board, from their beginners to most experienced black belts.
The combined effort
of their teams resulted in Warwick University taking home the
coveted team trophy after a very close battle with last year’s
winners, Samurai Judo Club.
Warwick's high-quality
squad now enters one of the busiest periods of their calendar
as they're due to compete in London and Sheffield in coming weeks
ahead of the prestigious BUCS Championships on Saturday 19 March.
"We would like to
thank the British Judo Association, Warwick Sport and Teach First
for their sponsorship of this event; it wouldn’t have been possible
without them," a club spokesman said.
