The Olympic sport of judo
inspired children to pursue a career on the mat at the 2010 SportsJAM
on Tuesday 3 August at Mile End Park Stadium.
The event sees a minimum
of 15 community sports clubs stage a taster session with the aim
of encouraging them the children to become members at a local
club.
SportsJAM is run by Access
Sport - a dynamic charity founded in 2004 - whose work aims to
give children access to sport in disadvantaged areas of the country.
The event is one aspect of a long term development programme to
develop sustainable community serving sports clubs run by the
charity.
Nick Parkhill, London Development
Manager for Access Sport, has directed the charity’s work with
some of London’s most respected and up-and-coming community clubs.
“We’ve been supporting
Tower Hamlets Judo Club for just over a year now,” he said.
“We have had nine Sports JAMs in all
across the country, and this was our second in East London. In
both of these we’ve had judo represented and it’s gone really
well with the young people each time.”
The judo taster session
was led by the British Judo Association’s East London Development
Coach Nicole Nunn who was supported by her North London counterpart
Gabor Szanyi-Nagy.
Nick added: “Nicole and
her team were excellent yesterday and we got great feedback from
people who visited the judo zone.”
