2011 Scottish University Individual Championships report

The Scottish Universities and Colleges Individual Championships were held last weekend at the Arc in Caledonian University.

There was very exciting judo on display at the event as the medal tally was dominated by the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, with Edinburgh just topping the table with them taking 3 golds, 2 silvers and 3 bronzes to Glasgows 3 golds and 4 bronzes.

Highlights of the day included the Mens 2 nd Kyu and above U66kgs final where the current BUCS bronze medallist from Glasgow at U60kgs fought up a weight to beat his opponent from Aberdeen with some impressive judo. There was also a closely fought Mens Open which saw an u81s player of Edinburgh University overcome his o100kgs clubmate in the final.

There was only three women entered which cause the womens competition to be fought as an open weight and grade. It was experience that won with the BUCS u63 bronze medallist from Glasgow taking the gold.

The Mens 2 nd Kyu and above U81kgs category was the most widely anticipated of the day with two members of Edinburgh University who also train at Ratho tipped for the final. However, some of the most exciting matches came in the bronze medal fights, which saw both Glasgow and Edinburgh triumph over the University of the West of Scotland.

One of the most courageous displays came from the U73s Men 2 nd Kyu and above gold medallist who fought through injury to claim his medal. An informal teams competition was fought at the end in preparation for the teams competition at BUCS in March where Scotland are defending silver medallists.
