Casterton Business and
Enterprise College clinched the inaugural Rutland Area Secondary
Schools title in Leicestershire.
Five schools were represented
in a competitive but good natured competition.
The boys’ lightweight group
saw Callum Rowley win both his contests to earn a gold medal for
Casterton B&E College, with Joe Etherington winning silver
for De Lisle RC School. John Muir fought tenaciously against two
higher graded players to finish with a bronze medal for Catmose
College.
The boys’ heavyweight group
created great excitement when three of the four players finished
the pool with a draw. After a tense rematch, Luke Etherington
came out on top, winning the group for De Lisle RC School, with
Monty Coyle earning a silver medal for The King’s School, and
bronze medals going to Joe Potter of Casterton B&E College
and Jamie Lanyon of Ratcliffe College.

Lily Hemsley and Rebecca
Wensley, both from Catmose College, battled it out for the lightweight
girls’ title, with Lily just beating Rebecca to the gold in her
fist ever competition, while Alex Cutforth’s three wins to Olivia
Stevenson’s two meant that Alex won the heavyweight girl’s title
for Casterton B&E College with Olivia having to settle for
silver.
The overall winning School
was Casterton B&E College with two gold and one bronze medal.
Throw of the day trophies were awarded to Monty Coyle and Alex
Cutforth. Spirit of Judo awards went to John Muir and Lily Hemsley.
Vale Judo Club’s Louise
Newton, Co-organiser of the event, said: “Thanks to the young
officials who ensured the competition ran smoothly – young referees
Alec Newton, Ben Allen and Holly Newton, and table officials Megan
Rowley and Charlie Watt.”
