New funding opens door for disability judo class

The Parks Judo Club will introduce disability judo sessions in July in conjunction with North Tyneside Councils Widening Horizons 4 Sport programme.

The Tyne and Wear outfit are already known for their diverse group of members which range from beginners to black belts and are aged from 5 to 55.

A Council spokesman said: “Sport plays an important role in the lives of many residents but we're keen for even more people to get involved and enjoy a sporting experience that could change their lives.

“We're doing this by creating an environment of new and improved sporting opportunities.

“In particular, we're aiming to enhance the provision of a number of key sports in the borough. This programme will improve the quality and diversity of opportunities available to residents of North Tyneside.”

The club’s head coach Duncan Stewart, 48, has worked closely with the Council to secure funding for the class.

“We have been working towards this with North Tyneside Council for some time to set the class up,” he said.

“We have done some taster sessions and the council have given us a huge amount of help to get some funding through the programme to run this which we have achieved.”

Stewart believes the class has a great deal of potential and in time would like to incorporate it into their existing sessions.

“I will be taking the sessions and our hope is that we can integrate them into the main club but also allowing them a session where they can train together at their own pace if they so wish.

“For some time now we have had one child who is deaf with us and the another has learning difficulties. The latter has been with us since he was 5 and he’s now 18 so that will give you a feel for where we are at.”

Stewart added: “It is also my intention to have the older person at the sessions to chat with the players and help them if he can to integrate. If you need any more info let me know.”

The club will hold the sessions at the Tyne Youth & Community Centre on Mariners Lane in Tynemouth.

Under 16’s will train on a Tuesday at 18:15 – 19:15 on a Tuesday with adults following at 19:30 – 20:30.

The first session is free to all participants and will be £2.00 per session thereon.

On Monday and Friday The Parks Judo Club train at The Parks Leisure Centre, Howdon Road, North Shields, NE29 6TL. On Wednesday and Thursday they hold training at Tyne Youth and Community Centre, Chirnside House, Mariners Lane, Tynemouth, NE30 4AT. Men and women train on Thursday at 18:30 – 20:00 while boys and girls train on Wedesnday and Thursday at 18:30 – 20:00.
