Oxford Judo shines on University circuit

Oxford Judo, the home of Oxford University and Oxford City Judo Clubs, retained the team trophy at the London University Championships on Saturday 12 February at Brunel University.

Members of both Oxford University and Oxford Brookes shone as they achieved three gold medals, five silver and two bronze.

There was strong performance across as the board as Jordan Doherty, Rachel Norris, Max Denning, Alex Jones and Kabalan Gaspard all impressed.

Oxford judoka also gained points towards their 2nd and 3rd Dan grades at a High Wycombe grading on the same day

“This high standard had been set by many of the same players competing at the Warwick Invitational Championships the previous weekend, in which the men’s and women’s teams both gained bronze medals,” a club statement said.

The Oxford University Sports Federation Club of the Year continued their success after Saturday’s event with some excellent performances at the Northern Home Counties Championships on the Sunday. In this national ranking event Alex Jones took gold while Rebecca Bayliss, James Shepherd and Justin Gregory all claimed bronze medals.

The club hopes to continue its highly-successful start to 2011 with another victory at the annual Varsity match against Cambridge University on the Saturday 5 March, and further success at BUCS as they look to build on the women’s teams silver medal and men’s team’s bronze medal of last year.

Meanwhile Oxford coach Chris Doherty, who also works as British Judo’s South East Technical Officer, is running a Preparation for Performance workshop with former World Championship bronze medallist Steve Gawthorpe on Friday 25 February.

The event, which will take place at High Wycombe Judo Centre, is open to all young players aged 10 and above who hold at least a 5th mon grade as well as coaches. The session will run from 10:00 – 16:30 and entries, at a cost fo £3, will be accepted on the day. For more information call Chris Doherty on 07967781663.
