Oxford University Judo
Club celebrated a double success at
the Oxford University Sports Federation
Awards as the club won the Elmer
Cotton Sports Club of the Year trophy and judoka Becky Bayliss
won Sportswoman of the Year on Thursday November 25.
Oxford University Sports
Federation President presented the awards and had high praise
for the University’s judo stars.
“In the last academic year
the effort of both players and coaches has produced Varsity champions,
nine BUCS medallists, two Commonwealth Championship medallists
and members of the Great British squad, in one of the most successful
years in the history of the club,” said the President.
2nd Dan Rebecca Bayliss
is studying for a DPhil in Cardiology and is a former women’s
captain and a successful President.
Rebecca is known for her
exemplary attitude towards training, enthusiasm and encouragement
of the other women on her team, as well as giving high performances
at an international level.
Rebecca won bronze in the
Commonwealth Games in Singapore in January and reigned supreme
as the British Universities Champion in the under 57 kilogram
category.
The women’s
team managed to win the British Universities Team silver medal
in part due to her contribution. Becky defeated the President
of Cambridge University Judo Club in the annual Varsity match,
helping ensure her teams overall success.

Club Chairman Dr Tony Buley
said: “We have to congratulate all our medal winners during the
year and our dedicated coaches who inspired and supported them
but the award also recognises the tremendous spirit that pervades
the whole club.
“I see this every time
I come along to watch a training session and I receive similar
reports from the many sessions I don’t get along to. You have
all contributed.
“I want to pay a special
tribute to Andy Stewart and Karen Kruska, the two OUJC Presidents
who have held office during 2010 and whose commitment and organising
abilities as well as their own competitive skills have been so
crucial in us achieving this award.
“I know how hard they have
to work; being President isn’t an easy job. I have already mentioned
our coaches but the same comments can be made about Chris and
Carol Doherty. I have to thank all four.”
