Notts judo aces team up for medal success

Nottingham’s junior county judo squad hit the medal trail at the Samurai Minimon Team Championships in Kidderminster on Sunday 10 April.

The minimon event, a friendly competition for novices and intermediate judoka, attracted competitors from across the British circuit including strong contingents from Kettering Premier Judo Club and Bristol county squad.

Nottingham took four teams to Kidderminster and came away with a hugely impressive medal-haul of two team golds, one bronze and fifth-place.

The players within the four teams were selected by weight and belt colour from the attendees of the bi-monthly squad training session that took place in March.

In the lightweight class the boys orange belt and under team of Charlie Young, Charlie Tongue and Jamie Spencer-Pickup took gold while in girls heavyweight action the green belt and under team of Marija Beliukeviciute, Kyra-Mae Leighton and Shannon Stevenson.

Also in the lightweight class, the boys red belt team of Wiktor Gojtka, Brandon Allsebrook and Jack Hopewell took a well-deserved bronze. In heavyweight action the boys green belt and under team of William Penfold, Ahston Butterfield and Harvey Penfold finished in a credible fifth-place.

“We would like to thank Paul Keeton and Steve Tongue who provided coach support throughout the day and also the parents and players who made the journey to Kidderminster to support Nottingham at this event,” said county coach Jason Dutton.

“The Nottinghamshire teams showed great sportsmanship, determination and team spirit throughout the day and were a credit to Nottingham and their respective clubs.”

Nottingham’s budding judo stars will tackle opposition on the continent on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 April as the county coaches take a 19-strong squad on a self-funded trip to Belgium.

The young judoka will take part in the highly-regarded Judo Tori Competition in Jodoigne which is expected to attract over 1,000 competitors from across Europe. The trip has been part funded by Nottingham Judo to give the players the opportunity to compete abroad and get valuable experience.

Nottingham Judo is currently looking for sponsors who could also help towards the costs of such trips and other events throughout the UK. If you are interested in sponsoring the local judo talent please contact Paul Keeton on 0700 349 6051 or by email at enquiries@nottsjudo.org.uk .
