Newcastle United Football
Club in conjunction with the Premier League 4 Sport programme
recently held a half term multi-sport camp at Newburn Activity
centre, home to Newburn Judo Club.
Local children were given
the opportunity to take part in various activities including dancing,
climbing, archery and trampolining with the main emphasis on judo.
34 children attended the
sessions with ages ranging from 7 to 14 years old. Most of the
children who took part in the camp regularly attend a weekly judo
satellite clubs that takes place at Sacred Heart School, Walbottle
Campus and St Thomas More School in Gateshead.
All of the participants
took to the mat in the morning and tried the other activities
in the afternoon. Head coach of Newburn Judo Club Joe Laws brought
in two guest judo coaches, Carlos Pireira from Madeira and Edu
Caballeira, from La Coruna, Spain. Both were visiting Newcastle
for a few days as part of an exchange with Newburn Judo Club who
toured Madeira in 2010.

Joe Laws said: “It has
been a fantastic three days for everyone who has taken part. The
fact that Carlos and Edu were able to bring their ideas and experience
to the mat was fantastic for the children and for the judo coaches,
as we picked up lots of new ideas from them which we can now take
back to our club.”
Evie Birkett, who is 7
years old and attends Throckley Primary School and is new to the
sport, said: “I have had lots of fun and have made lots of new
friends. I want to try my best and become very good at judo.”
Lisa Bell, Premier League
4 Sport co-ordinator for Newcastle United Foundation, said: “Joe
and his team put lots of effort into judo in the area and it is
great to see children getting involved in the project but more
importantly making the transition from satellite club to Newburn
Judo Club.”
