Olympic icon Neil Adams thrills Mid Cornwall Judokwai

Two-time Olympic silver medallist Neil Adams thrilled Mid Cornwall Judokwai’s young judo players during a masterclass on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July at Newquay Sports Centre.

Adams, now head coach of the Belgian national team, is widely regarded as Britain’s greatest judoka of all time after a glittering career which saw him capture two Olympic silver medals, five European Championships and one world title.

The 52-year-old from Rugby, Warwickshire received of a number of gifts from the club to mark his visit to the seaside resort. From the world of surfing, one of the region’s other foremost sports, came a presentation of a wetsuit from four-time British Champion Spencer Hargraves and Quicksilver of Newquay Fistral Beach and a canvass print of a local surfer.

Mid Cornwall Judokwai’s Head Coach Jason Beer, who organised the masterclass, said: “Neil is known and idolised all over the world for his technical ability in the sport of judo as well as creating champions in the sport.”

Neil Adams said: “I’ve been approached all over the world to develop coaching resources and deliver development courses. I was delighted to come back to Mid Cornwall Judo Kwai to continue its development program, and it is always a pleasure to work with coaches such as Jason Beer who cares about the sport and approaches it with professional and supporting manner.”

Mid Cornwall Judokwai would like to thank Newquay Sports Centre, Mr Hargraves of Quicksilver, Linda, Andrea, Lynda, Steve, Ray, Steven, Ryan, Arnnis, Dave, Kyran, Daniel Cullen for helping stage and deliver the event.

Mid Cornwall Judokwai train at Newquay Scout Hut, TR7 3BU. Boys and girls train on a Friday at 17:30 - 18:30 while men and women follow at 18:30 - 20:00.
