A retired former world
champion has given her backing to a club staging free training
for youngsters.
Berkshire’s Nicola Fairbrother
has been a long-time advocate of Mid Sussex Martial Arts School’s
free judo programme which was introduced in 2008 to enable youngsters
aged from 8 to 18 to practice the sport for free.
“This is a great programme
and one that I support wholly,” said the 1992 Barcelona Olympics
silver medallist.
“I know how much it cost
me - well, I should say how much it cost my parents - to keep
me going in judo when I was younger.”
The 1993 world champion
and three-time European Champion - widely regarded as one of Britain’s
greatest ever female fighters - believes the club founder and
coach Roger Payne deserves credit for sustaining the programme.
“I have to offer my congratulations
to Roger and his team for maintaining the programme and ensuring
all youngsters have a great opportunity to try and progress in
the sport.”
As Mid Sussex Martial Arts
School enters its third decade of activity, the free sessions
continue to be fully funded by the Tenshin Kan Youth Foundation.
The club has also enjoyed
a rich spell on the competition circuit in 2010 as they boast
eight county champions and have captured 14 county squad places.
Club founder and coach
Roger Payne said: “We’ve been very successful again this year
in competitions and with the programme we recognise the need to
attract and develop new judoka.”
