Judo coach receives runners-up award from Mayor

Dudley Judo Club coach Alan Hackett has picked up a runners-up award for services to judo at the Mayor of Dudley Awards.

Hackett, 47, who received a silver medal at the British Judo Association Annual Awards last year, was nominated by the people of Dudley for his work in judo.

In addition to being the chief instructor the judo stalwart is also the club chairman and secretary.

“To just be nominated by the people of Dudley for my work in teaching judo was fantastic,” said Hackett.

“The biggest thing that has kept me in the sport for all these years is the people I have met over the time and the organisation itself. I love the sport of judo, to watch children and adults come to the club week after week and to take medals at competitions makes it worthwhile. Just to know that while the children are at the club learning our art, knowing that they are away from the other side of the coin of drugs and crime.

“It was nice to be recognised for the volunteer work thousands of people do, week after week and go unnoticed. To pick up such an award for doing something I love to do makes it all the better.”
