Prince Edward backs Mid Sussex Martial Arts School's free judo initiative

Prince Edward took time out of his visit to the South of England Agricultural Show to speak to Mid Sussex Martial Arts School founder and coach Roger Payne and issue his support to the club’s free training initiative for youngsters.

The prince was a guest of honour at the show in at Ardingly, West Sussex which saw the club stage a demonstration as part of the West Sussex County Council’s Voluntary and Statutory Youth Service.

The club continues to offer FREE judo to juniors aged 8 - 18 years across Sussex, first introduced in 2008 to mark the first 20 years of the club staging judo in Mid Sussex.

Roger Payne said: “It was a great honour for our players and of course for myself to be acknowledged by Prince Edward, especially as our dojo receives no funding, yet welcomes everyone, young and old, experienced to novice, plus of course complete beginners.”

The Clubmark outfit is fully funded by the Tenshin Kan Youth Foundation and has received rich praise from 1992 Olympic silver medallist and former world champion judoka Nicola Fairbrother MBE.

“This is a great idea and one that I support wholly,” said the two-time European Champion.

“I know how much it cost me (well, I should say how much it cost my parents, really) to keep me going in Judo when I was younger. Congratulations to Roger and the team for coming up with and sustaining this idea. Everyone in Sussex, you don't know how lucky you are! Go for it. Go and try Judo for free today!"

Mid Sussex Martial Arts is an approved 'Have Fun' Activity Centre for West Sussex County Council, backed by the Mid Sussex District Council & Sussex County Sports Partnership Trust, plus supported by Haywards Heath Town Council Mayor and works in conjunction with ‘Olympus Holiday Academy’.

The British Judo Association is the National Governing Body for the Olympic Sport of judo in Great Britain.
