Judo clubs join forces in Kent

Medway Park Judo Club hosted seven of their club counterparts for a joint training session on Saturday April 2 as part of the newly-launched Medway Judo Development Group.

The group was established to increase participation in the Olympic sport in the Medway area along with improving the skills of existing members and retaining them.

The clubs signed up are Parkwood, Oakwood, Medkwai, Medkwai Strood, Wrenwa, Medway Park (Rainham), Walderslade and Riverside.

Over 30 judoka took part with eight club coaches overseeing the action along with British Judo’s South East Technical Officer Chris Doherty.

The session involved all of the coaches giving technical instruction and support as well as allowing players to work with players from other clubs in randori.

Chris Doherty said:”It was fantastic to see so many children and coaches supporting this innovative group and having fun”

The group has many more activities planned after such a successful first session.

Peter Beard, British Judo’s Development Officer for the region, was one of the driving forces behind the group’s creation.

“This is a fantastic example of local clubs and coaches working together for mutual benefit,” he said.

“I would encourage other clubs to look to replicate this model.”
