Kamiko and Wymondham players hand-picked in France

Kamiko Judo Club and Norfolk’s Wymondham Judo Club provided eight judoka for a team event in Marseille, France on Saturday 11 June and Sunday 12 June,

Five Kamiko players and three from Wymondham were recruited by high-quality foreign teams and saw action against competitors from right across Europe.

After a first-class training session on the Friday with two national 6th Dan coaches and over a 100 judoka on the mat the travelling Brit’s were able to prime themselves before linking up with their teams.

Kamiko’s Harry Cooper, Joe Willis and Callum Redwin fought for French outfits, George Martin represented a Spanish team while Kiya Claydon and Billy-Ray Deane got the nod from further French sides.

Wymondham Judo Club’s Alexander Tonnison appeared for a Lanzarote team while club colleague River Morris was fielded by a team from hosts France.

Harry cooper's team won one contest land lost two, Callum Redwin’ and Joe Willis’ sides battled valiantly but failed to record a win.

George Martin’s team chalked up three victories to progress to the semi-finals where they lost out to a team from Madrid but recovered to win the bronze medal.

Alexander Tonnison won all three of his contests but his team-mates failed to match his success and the Lanzarote team were eliminated.

Kiya Claydon was injured in her first contest but her side went on to take a bronze. Billy-Ray Deane won both of his contests but River Morris lost her bout which saw their French side exit in the preliminary rounds.

After the competition all the judoka and coaches enjoyed a banquet at the hotel and exchanged gifts while sharing stories into the early hours.

The British contingent arrived back in Stansted on Monday afternoon and are already preparing for a flurry on trips in the second half of the year.
