Comberton Judo Club and
Anglia Ruskin University have paired up to bring former two-time
World Champion and double Olympic medallist Emanuela Pierantozzi
to Comberton stage a women and girls session on Saturday 28 August.
The decorated Italian,
41, claimed silver at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and a bronze
medal eight years later in Sydney.
Pierantozzi, who’s also
a two-time European Champion, will host a technical session, oversee
randori action on the mat and round off the day by taking part
in a question and answer session.
“Comberton Judo club feel
it is an honour to have such a world renowned player and coach
come to the judo club to deliver a session,” said the club’s Head
Coach Bob Challis, who holds the same role at Anglia Ruskin University
where he works as a Sport and P.E lecturer.
“This is an important year
in the development of the club and this session will give us a
trial run of our new dojo which should be ready in December.”
“There are many differences
between men and women's judo and Emanuela is going to highlight
some of these differences,” he added.
While one of Europe’s finest
female players works with Britain’s next crop of stars, Challis,
a EJU level 5 high performance coach, will take a session for
parents entitled ‘the developing female athlete’.
“The aim of the session
is to educate parents and coaches on how female athletes develop,
what training they should be doing and when they should be doing
it,” said Challis, who’s also the t echnical and matside coach
to British Army’s judo team.
“We are also going to use
the session to educate parents, we feel this is very important
as the parent often acts as manager to many of our athletes in
this country who have to travel from club to club in order to
acquire enough training partners.
“We will dispel some of
the myths surrounding female training regimes; we’ll also look
at overtraining and how to avoid it.”
The women and girls session
with Emanuela is £10 to enter and participants will be required
to bring a packed lunch.
Challis is currently studying
a PhD investigating the dynamics of lightweight women’s
judo from a tactical, technical
and time-motion perspective.
The British Judo Association is the
National Governing Body for the Olympic Sport of judo in Great
Britain.
