Hollesley Judo Club, one
of Suffolk’s premier sports clubs, has won the prestigious Club
of the Year and Coach of the Year awards at the 2010 Suffolk Coastal
Sports Awards.
The club, who founded in
1993 with a thriving junior scene, now has a membership of 70
players and houses eight qualified coaches.
Julie Jollife, a senior
coach and club secretary, who’s also the wife of Coach of the
Year Neil, says the well-run outfit owes a lot to its dedicated
team of helpers.
“We’re very fortunate to
have such a strong network of helpers which includes admin support
and a welfare officer as well as tuck shop and tea bar helpers,”
said the club official.
“The whole club pulls together
as a team and we train an average of 60 players in three sessions
on a Thursday. Anyone is welcome to join one of our beginners
courses and our motto is ’have fun and you can achieve. All abilities
are included and you can achieve at your own pace.”
The club has four satellite
school clubs, with a fifth in the pipeline, and children from
15 different schools in the area attend sessions while in 2009
the outfit received the Bronze Clubmark Award which recognises
good practice.

Julie is also delighted
that her husband’s selfless work has been recognised.
“Neil is always the first
one at club and the last to leave. He always takes the beginners
courses and has a fantastic rapport with the children.
“He also makes the judo
fun and so the children easily fit in with the main group. All
his players look up to him and it’s a very well deserved award.”

The club regularly has
inter-club competitions between their satellite clubs and on Thursday
11 November will be hosting a Sponsored Throw event in aid of
Help 4 Heroes and to raise money for the club.
The event will be held
in Tunstall and the club hopes to achieve 1000 throws in 10 minutes
by 80 judoka who will take to the mat in teams of five.
There will also be a cake
stall and raffle with the fundraising evening starting at 19:00.
